4 Dangers Of Neglecting Your Landscape

Many landscaping elements can be overlooked. Yard maintenance does not have to be a huge commitment.

It just takes a little bit of time each week to mow the lawn and to maybe weed the flower bed. Here are some dangers that you may run across if you choose to ignore your landscaping maintenance.

Decreased Property Value. With a well-landscaped property, you can increase your home’s value by 10-15%. By neglecting your landscape, you can do just the opposite and decrease it. Any homeowner knows that they should try and improve their property value for the sake of potential re-sale and the overall good of the community. By ignoring your landscaping, you not only are hurting your own home but potentially your neighbor’s property values as well. Your neighbors will appreciate it if you are on point with your landscaping efforts.

Prevent Healthy Growth. When trees and shrubs are neglected, they tend to overgrow and become unmanageable. Once a year it is best to trim the trees and shrubs in order to help promote healthy growth. This will help remove weak limbs that could potentially cause damage in a storm. Doing this will also improve the appearance of your yard as a whole. Without a healthy trim each year, the trees and plants spend unnecessary energy on trying to maintain limbs that are no longer needed or useful. This prevents them from growing new, healthy, fruitful branches.

Spread Disease. Just as people get sick, so too can trees and foliage. If you notice something looking a bit unusual on your tree’s trunks or branches, you don’t want to ignore it. Without addressing the potential illness, you are allowing it to spread to other trees in your yard and neighborhood. This could kill many trees, making you have to remove them and start from scratch. This could be a long and expensive process. By contacting a tree pest and disease specialist, you will be able to face this head on and take appropriate action steps to help prevent this from spreading.

Poor Reputation. Hate to say it, but people do judge a book by its cover. When your neighbors or pedestrians pass by, they are evaluating the condition of your home and how well your landscape is maintained. This is oftentimes the only information that people receive about a residence. So if the landscape is neglected, people are bound to think negatively about the people who own it. It may be unfair, but it’s the only information others have to go off of. So keeping up with the outward appearance of the home is going to speak positively about the homeowners.

To sum up, there are many benefits to keeping up with your landscape. It will prevent you from decreasing your property value, spreading disease and having a poor reputation in the area. Who would want to risk it?
